Duke Kunshan’s Tailored Approach to Global Health Education

The Duke Kunshan Master of Science in Global Health program was launched in August 2014. Drawing on faculty, experience, and expertise from the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI), while supporting students in research around the world, the program and curriculum can be tailored to your individual interests and career goals. Each student’s path through the program will be slightly different but united by a common recognition that an interdisciplinary approach and multidisciplinary understanding are critical to solving complex global health problems.

The Master of Science in Global Health Program at Duke Kunshan University has produced eight classes of 105 graduates, 81 of whom are from China and 24 from nine other countries, with international students accounting for about 23%.

The multifaceted, interdisciplinary nature of the Master of Science in Global Health Program creates highly diverse and rewarding career paths.

Nearly 40% of graduates work in industry, particularly in pharmaceutical, health-care consulting and biotechnology sectors. Employers include Fortune 500 companies such as GSK, Pfizer, KPMG and IQVIA. A third of graduates work in nonprofit organizations, including universities, research institutions, public hospitals, NGOs and government agencies, primarily as project managers, researchers and data analysts. Other than seeking employment, a quarter of graduates pursue PhD programs in countries and regions including mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, the United States, and Northern European countries.

What DKU gave me wasn’t just skills or resources—it gave me confidence, courage, and a sense of belonging. It’s a place where you’re allowed to try, to fail, and to speak up. Once you step in, you’ll realize: you have the right to choose, to change, and most importantly, you’ll be supported along the way.

Looking back, I’m deeply grateful to the Duke Kunshan University Global Health Program for expanding my possibilities. It’s a place rooted in China yet connected to the world, offering a unique cross-cultural learning experience.

Looking back, I realize that I once tended to focus more on gains and losses rather than on the possibilities ahead. DKU taught me that whatever you do, you must always look forward—the road beneath your feet and the path ahead matter far more.

Upon completing the program, you will be awarded an official Duke University degree.

You can expect to complete the program within 1.5 to 2 years. The curriculum consists of 38 credits and necessitates a minimum of three semesters of study. The program focuses on:

– An understanding of key global health concepts and challenges

– A solid foundation in core methodologies used in global health research

– Ethics training and considerations applicable across cultures

– Core concepts to help students evaluate and understand health systems

Active learning is a defining feature of our global health program. Students actively collaborate with a dedicated faculty mentor to craft an innovative research project, incorporating a minimum of 10 weeks of immersive field experience. Historically, our students have explored more than 20 countries/regions across six continents for their field studies. The primary objective of the fieldwork is to involve students in investigating global health disparities, with a specific emphasis on the impact on vulnerable groups. Additionally, this hands-on experience serves as a catalyst, inspiring the development of their master’s thesis.
